Soni López-Chávez

June 3, 2021

Interview with Soni López-Chávez 3/25/2021

Tell us about a project (or projects) you are working on.

I am currently working on several illustrations that will focus on self care. I am also working on a new mural in Barrio Logan.

How has this ongoing pandemic affected your work/practice?

I started my art career in May 2020 because of the pandemic. I was forced to stop everything that I was doing and finally had time to concentrate on my art.

When did your journey as an art maker/administrator/etc. begin?

I started 10 years ago as an art curator. Two years into it I opened my own Art Gallery alongside my partner Chris Zertuche. After 6 years we had to close our doors. I have now been focused on my art since May 202o.

What/who are some of your greatest influences?

My biggest influences are my culture and my family. Artists like Frida Kahlo, Selena Quintanilla also inspire me.

Lastly, is there any advice or wisdom you’d like to provide to rising artists/arts leaders?

I’d say to keep at it. In many ways art can help and heal.
